Grade R school readiness: readiness before results.

School readiness includes language, relationships, independence, movement, emotional development and early thinking. It is broader than early academics.

Grade R helps children build foundations for Grade 1 through play, routines, conversation, movement and carefully structured learning experiences. A single pass-or-fail checklist cannot describe the whole child.

What school readiness really involves

  • Communication: expressing needs, listening and talking about familiar experiences.
  • Social participation: joining activities, taking turns and asking for help.
  • Independence: managing belongings and familiar routines with growing confidence.
  • Movement and fine-motor development: outdoor movement, building, drawing, cutting and manipulating materials.
  • Early number and thinking: sorting, patterning, counting real objects and explaining choices.
  • Emotional development: separating from caregivers, coping with small frustrations and recovering with support.

Use short, everyday practice

Read and talk about a picture story. Sort socks or containers. Draw, build and describe. Practise opening a lunch container or packing a school bag. Short, calm practice is more useful than turning home into another classroom.

What is normal?

Children develop unevenly. A child may be confident in conversation and still need support with pencil control, or enjoy numbers while needing more help with routines. Compare the child with their own progress and use specific observations in conversations with the teacher.

When extra support may help

If a concern continues, describe what you have noticed and ask the teacher what they observe in class. A parent guide can support understanding, but it cannot diagnose a developmental or learning difficulty.
